About me:

First of all, I am from a southwestern suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Yes, I live near the Mall of America.  Yes, I call soda "pop."  I also learned the childhood game "duck duck goose" as "duck duck grey duck."  I lived in Winnipeg, Canada for one year as well.  The average high temperature that winter was -40 (which,by the way, is the point at which Fahrenheit and Celcius are equal).  So you may say that I am used to the cold weather, but in my opinion you can never truly get used to really cold weather.  I am, however, used to dealing with cold weather so don't be surprised if you run into me on campus wearing knee high winter boots and lots of layers!  I am a huge fan of snow, and since it snowed this weekend my friends and I had some fun times playing in the snow, and successfully managed to get ourselves completely covered in it, as you can see below.

I love to spend time in the great outdoors.  This summer I spent 40 days canoeing in the beautiful arctic tundra up by Hudson Bay. It was through a YMCA camp based in northern Minnesota, and there were six women total, two canoes, and 500 lbs of food. We traveled on two rives, the Kazan and the Kunwak.  I have included some pictures of my trip down below.

Here you can see just how far north in Canada we truly were.  We couldn't even use a compass up their because we were too close to the magnetic North Pole.  We were never quite north enough to officially be in the arctic, however.

Here is my whole group at Kazan Falls (I am the one second from the right).  Obviously we portaged around this!

Tulemalu lake

Once we came upon Tulemalu Lake on July 25th, we knew we were in trouble!  The whole lake was almost completely frozen over with thick, thick ice, so we were forced to rig up some harnesses and pull our canoes over the ice like sled dogs!

Jasmine decides that this mini iceburg deserves a handstand.

sunset

As you can see by this picture, the land was incredibly flat where we were.  There were no trees, so oftentimes it was hard to find the horizon line.  This was probably taken around 2 or 3 am.  With 20 hours of sunlight and no watches, we had a hard time deciding exactly what time it was.

caribou

Caribou Xing!  There were about 2000+ caribou we saw this day migrating.

after trail

We're back in Northern Minnesota (as you can tell by the trees) and we're getting ready to cross the lake to see our families, tell stories, and take our first showers in 40 days!
