The Kingsley Annotated Bibliography
The primary focus of this web site is to present annotated bibliographies
of selected secondary works on the life, activities and abundant writings
of the Rev. Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) published since 1900. While such
bibliographic citation databases as MLA Bibliography (Modern Language Association)
and ABELL (Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature) are
essential resources of Kingsley scholarship, they do not provide abstracts
or summaries. Moreover, the MLA database only dates from 1922 and ABELL
from 1920. While the bibliographies on the present site are by no means
intended to be comprehensive, they represent a strong selection of the
major works of Kingsley scholarship published in the twentieth century
and later. A more complete bibliography is Styron Harris's Charles
Kingsley: A Reference Guide (Mass.: G.K. Hall, 1981) which covers the
years 1848-1978.
I have provided an annotation and assigned descriptors or subject
headings to each of the bibliographic entries. These descriptors are intended
to define major themes in each work and one may toggle between works having
the same descriptor. In addition to this page the site has five other
major pages:
I would be most grateful to hear of recommendations for additions to
these pages or to be notified of errors.
