In addition to the mid-semester and final examinations, a short paper (5-7 pp.) will be due March 19 and a longer one (8-10 pp.) April 26 (topics to be announced). Late papers will not be accepted. No make-up exams will be given without a valid medical excuse. Grading is based on the standards described in the Student Handbook, and final grades will be calculated roughly as follows: 1st essay 20%, 2nd essay 35%, midterm 10%, final 25%, participation 10%.Your attendance and regular participation in this course are essential; frequent unexcused absences can result in automatic failure. Lack of participation can significantly lower your grade. If you feel that the class format, level of difficulty, or dynamics of class discussion diminish your chances or desire to participate, please let me know: I'll remain open to your suggestions.
