AIMS
Knowledge of a foreign language and culture opens the door to the global community intellectually and professionally.  Learning a foreign language will help you gain new perspectives of other ways of perceiving the world.  Elementary Spanish offers a practical knowledge of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language as spoken by native speakers.  This practical knowledge will be developed in five areas:  listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural competence.

Specific objectives include attaining a low intermediate level of oral proficiency (the ability to participate in basic conversations).  You will be able to talk about familiar topics, ask and answer simple questions, and maintain simple face-to-face conversations.  You will begin to speak with a relative degree of grammatical accuracy about familiar topics. You will begin to learn to narrate and describe in the past, to make requests, to express doubt, and to express emotion. Reading and writing skills at a commensurate level will be developed and practiced. You will also be introduced to the many cultures that comprise the Spanish-speaking world in Spain, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and in the United States.

Students may take RL018 concurrently with RL016.  This is a one-credit course that provides additional practice and more time on task working with material presented in RL016.  It meets for one hour per week and the average class size is ten students per class. NOTE: The grade received in RL018 will be included in your GPA.

COURSE PARTICULARS

  1. Prerequisites:  This is a beginning course for those who have taken RL015. If you did not take RL015, have studied two or more years of Spanish, and have not taken the placement exam, please do so ASAP. To access the placement exam, click here. If you are unsure about your placement, see Debbie Rusch in Lyons 308.
  2. RL018: Concurrent enrollment in RL018 is open to all students. It provides additional practice with concepts taught in RL016. RL018 meets in small groups once per week and students receive one credit and a grade in the course that DOES count in the overall GPA. RL018 is strongly suggested for for anyone wanted additional time on task and for athletes in session or people with a demanding work schedule. It is also suggested for students that did not take RL015 and may have been away from the study of Spanish for a few years.
  3. Attendance:  Classroom attendance is required.  The Department permits no makeup quizzes and allows only three absences (athletes are to attend all classes when not at scheduled events).  Additional absences will affect final grade and excessive absences may result in failure.  Illnesses with a written excuse from a physician or the Dean's office will be excused as will athletes attending scheduled athletic events or students involved in a BC-sponsored event when instructor has been notified in advance.
  4. Written Assignments:  Written assignments are to be turned in on the days indicated or no credit will be given.  You should not consult with anyone else (including tutors).  Using a dictionary is fine, but do NOT use an online translator. Consultation with anyone other than your instructor (or your practicum instructor) or use of an online translator will be considered a violation of the BC Academic Integrity Policy. Workbook/Lab Manuals must be self corrected in ANOTHER COLORED INK and will be handed in on indicated days.  The answers to the workbook can be accessed via Blackboard Vista. Lab assignments may be listened to in the Language Lab. One may also listen to the audio online via Blackboard Vista. Answers to the Lab Manual are in the Language Lab (313 Lyons) or are available via Blackboard Vista.
  5. Optional Web Activities and CD-ROM:  See explanation at end of syllabus.
  6. Make-up Policy:  No make-up quizzes will be given.  Exams may be made up for medical reasons only.  A written excuse from a physician or the Dean's office must be provided before the make-up is administered. Students at an approved BC event will be allowed to make-up quizzes and exams if the instructor has been notified in advance.
  7. THIS COURSE HAS A DEPARTMENTAL FINAL EXAM THAT WILL BE GIVEN ON: SATURDAY, MAY 15th AT 4:00 P.M.  This date is different from the time and date indicated in the Course Listing.  The make-up final exam, for students with approved conflicts, will be on Monday, May 17th at 4:00 P.M.

NOTE:  RL018 Spanish Practicum was created in response to student requests and is a one-credit course designed to enhance and improve your performance in RL016 Elementary Spanish.  In this course you will review and preview information introduced in RL016.  Class size averages about ten students per class to allow for individualized attention.  The course meets for 50 minutes each week and attendance is mandatory.  Enrollment in this course is optional for any student who feels it could help him/her improve.  It is strongly suggested for athletes in session who may miss a number of classes due to away meets and games and for people with a demanding work schedule. It is also strongly suggested for students who have not taken RL015 and are starting Spanish at BC after "a few years off" and think their Spanish may be rusty.  These courses fill quickly due to popularity so please register at once.

COURSE SYLLABUS

All assignments are to be done on the date indicated (i.e. on Friday, Jan. 16th, workbook Act.1-4 must be done).  Do the homework in the order it is assigned each day.  Anything marked para entregar will be handed in.  The completion of daily assignments will also have an impact on your participation grade since they help you prepare for class each day and this increases your accuracy and helps you gain confidence.  Completed Workbook/Lab Manuals are turned in on quiz or exam days.  Composition grades will be treated separately from the homework grade.  They will comprise 15% of your final grade.  Extra credit assignments are due on the days indicated and will not be accepted late.  All optional assignments refer to the WWW pages or the CD-ROM.

Un Cuento - Beatriz (Una palabra enorme) de Mario Benedetti - Toda la clase va a ser una discusión del cuento.

Leer y escribir: Read the following and do all activities in Spanish. Para entregar

Estrategia: Defining Style and Audience
In novels or short stories, the author usually decides whether to write in third or first person. Some authors write in first person from the point of view of one of the characters, and the reader can only rely on what the character says and does to better understand the character and his/her perceptions of others. When writing in third person, the omniscient author can convey more information about the characters and the story to the reader. A writer also chooses an audience (adults, teenagers, etc.) and keeps it in mind when writing the text.

As you read, it is useful to determine in which person the author is writing and who his/her audience is in order to best understand the work.

NOTE: Mario Benedetti was born in 1920 in Uruguay. His writings encompass all genres: novels, poetry, essays, theater, humor, movie scripts, and even song lyrics. He has published more than fifty books translated in over eighteen languages. In 1973, he became a political exile living in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and Spain. With the restoration of a democratic government in Uruguay in 1985, he was able to return to his homeland. In 1987, he received the Llama de Oro Amnistía Internacional Prize for his book Primavera con una esquina rota in which the story you are about to read appears.

Understanding the following terms may help you while reading:

lo que se le antoja = lo que quiere
se queda con algún vuelto = todavía tiene el cambio (monedas)
dos de mis muñecas = Ken y Barbie son muñecas
porque es muy gruñona = una persona que protesta mucho
estar muy alunada = estar de mal humor
la estrujo = le doy un abrazo fuerte
me acaricia el pelo = me toca el pelo con amor
por cualquier pavada = cosa sin importancia / tontería

Please print a copy of the story to consult, if needed, in class.

5/15 The final exam will be Saturday, May 15th at 4:00. Check time and place online or in Lyons 304.

COMPOSITIONS:

To improve your writing skills, you will write 5 compositions on assigned topics.  They will count as 15% of your final grade.  You will be graded on content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and originality.  Each composition should be a minimum of 8 to 10 lines in length and should cover the topic well.  Topics assigned will incorporate functions, grammar, and vocabulary being studied at the moment in class.  The compositions are due when indicated in the course syllabus.
When writing compositions:

  1. Try to think and write in Spanish from the first moment. Look up words sparingly (as few as three or four per composition).
  2. First drafts must be hand written.
  3. Type and DOUBLE SPACE your final draft. If you want to know how to type Spanish characters (á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, ñ, ¡, ¿) you will find instructions for both PCs and MAC here.
  4. Staple all drafts together putting the final draft on top.
  5. Turn in the composition ON TIME!  Late compositions will be accepted, but you will be penalized one letter grade for each day late: a B becomes a C if one day late, a D if two days late, and an F if three days late.
  6. Do not get outside help on the compositions. Outside help from a friend, a tutor, or an online translator will be considered a violation of the BC Academic Integrity Policy. If you feel you would like some feedback prior to handing in a composition, please see your instructor or the instructor of your practicum.

IMAGENES WEBSITE

When studying a language, one key element is practice, practice, practice. This helps to move information from short- to long-term memory. It is also important to study in small bits vs. cramming the night before a quiz or an exam. The Imágenes Web Site and CD-ROM are tools, that if used diligently can really help you make progress in your study of Spanish by increasing your accuracy, helping you attain greater retention of material presented, increasing your knowledge of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, raising your grade, and giving you the skills needed to succeed in future Spanish courses. Being more prepared you are for each day of class will also increase your confidence level and make you feel more comfortable in the class.

The Imágenes CD-ROM came free of charge with your textbook. If you purchased a used book and did not purchase a CD-ROM, you may access the CD-ROM contents on the Internet and there are copies of the Imágenes CD-ROM in the Language Lab in 313 Lyons that you may use. The CD-ROM activities can be used while studying a chapter or as a review for quizzes and exams. Much of the content is interactive and self-checking. The organization of the CD-ROM is similar to the organization of each chapter: Vocabulario I, Hacia la comunicación I, Nuevos horizontes, Vocabulario II, Hacia la comunicación II, and each chapter ends with a section titled Un poco de todo. If you click on a section, a series of activities will be displayed that provide a wealth of practice. If used consistently, the CD-ROM can be a most helpful tool to better master the basics of the language while also gaining additional cultural knowledge. To access the CD-ROM from the Internet, do the following:

  1. Go to this site: http://college.cengage.com/languages/spanish/caycedo/claro/6e/improve/improve1.html.
  2. Click on the last item in the list entitled More Practice.
  3. Select the Chapter you want from menu in the pop-up box and select the item you would like to practice.

The Imágenes Web Site provides additional practice with chapter vocabulary and grammar as well as cultural information.

  1. To move between chapters, use the drop down menu.
  2. The Preliminary Chapter has only the ACE the Test section, other chapters have Improve Your Grade and ACE the Test.
  3. By clicking on Improve Your Grade, you can access the Flashcards which allow you to practice vocabulary and verb conjugations without using English. These can be done WHILE you do a chapter and/or as review before exams or quizzes.
  4. The ACE the Test activities provide guided practice with each chapter's grammar and vocabulary. These can be done WHILE you do a chapter and/or as review before exams or quizzes.
  5. By clicking on Improve Your Grade, you will see the WEB Search activities. These use vocabulary and grammar presented in each chapter to help you read web sites created for and by Spanish speakers vs. written for a student of Spanish. Your knowledge of the language will help you comprehend and answer questions while learning cultural information about the Spanish-speaking world.
  6. By clicking on Improve Your Grade, you will see the Web Link section that provides additional links for you to learn more about cultural information presented in each chapter.
  7. By clicking on ACE the Test, you will see Ace Video Activities in chapters 8, 10, and 12. This section contains additional activities based on excerpts from the chapter video component.

HELPFUL INFORMATION ON THE WWW

  1. Want to know how to type Spanish characters (á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, ñ, ¡, ¿)?  Click here for instructions.
  2. If you need to brush up on your English grammar try this site.
  3. This site contains an on-line, bilingual dictionary.  Remember that when looking up an English word to find the Spanish equivalent, do not always grab the first translation you see, read all possible translations, and double check your choice by looking up in Spanish as well. To look up a word in Spanish, simply type in the Spanish word and read all possible transpations keeping in mind the context of the sentence where you read or heard the Spanish word. It is possible to download this to your computer by following the directions on the site.
  4. Having trouble finding the correct conjugation for a verb? Look up a verb in the bilingual dictionary and click on the word Conjugator at the top, center of the page. Once on this page, you can type in any infinitive to see forms. The forms you will use this semester include: gerundio (leyendo), participio (leído), presente (lee), imperfecto (leía), pretérito (leyó), presente del subjuntivo (que lea), imperativo (lea Ud.). Please note that there are other forms listed that you will learn in future study of Spanish with the exception of the future subjunctive which is not used in modern Spanish.
  5. Improve your pronunciation using a site prepared by the University of Iowa.

TUTORING

The trick to learning a foreign language is to NEVER GET BEHIND and to seek help the minute you feel a concept isn't clear.  REMEMBER that your instructor is your best source for individual tutoring.  You should take advantage of this and see your instructor during office hours.  If you are unable to meet with your instructor during office hours, see him/her to arrange another time.  If you are seeing your instructor and still feel you need extra help, BC makes tutoring available for all students.  Tutors can be found through the Connors Family Learning Center (617-552-0611), AHANA Jaime Escalante Tutorial Program (617-552-3358), and Learning Resources for Student Athletes (617-552-8533).  You must call first to make an appointment. REMEMBER: A tutor does not do homework nor correct compositions for you.  The purpose of a tutor is to provide additional explanations to help clarify concepts and to provide you with additional practice to help assimilate these concepts.

CASA HISPÁNICA

The Casa hispánica, located at Voute Hall, 110 Commonwealth Avenue, is a place for people to gather to participate in events that have to do with the Spanish language and Latino cultures. Students can live at the Casa hispanohablante anytime after the Freshman year.  A calendar of events is available in the main office of the Department of Romance Languages at 304 Lyons and on the Web.  Elementary students may be especially interested in the Latino movie series since most have English subtitles.  All movies are feature length films, are free of charge, and offer a unique view of Latino cultures.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

BC offers many opportunities to study abroad.  Summer, semester, and academic year programs in a number of countries including Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain.  This is the best way to sharpen your linguistic skills while immersing yourself into the culture of another country.  Being able to list study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country on a résumé is a valuable asset.  To obtain information, contact the Office of International Programs (552-3827). NOTE: It is best (but may not be mandatory for all programs) to have completed at least four semesters of Spanish prior to going abroad to study. Intermediate Spanish is offered at BC in the summer and a six-credit intensive Intermediate Spanish course is offered during the Fall semester.

DEPARTMENT OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

The office of the Department is in Lyons 304. For information about majors, minors, and course offerings in French, Spanish, and Italian, consult the homepage of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Many freshmen and sophomore students of Elementary Spanish combine studies at BC and study abroad to complete a Hispanic Studies minor. Click on your class to get more information: Freshmen --- Sophomores. If you are interested in majoring in Hispanic Studies and are a freshman, this is possible. See Debbie Rusch to discuss how this can be done since it requires careful planning.
