To FTP files to the www2 web server, the Office of Information Technology recommends that you use WS_FTP LE which free to students, faculty and staff at educational institutions. You can view the end-user licenses agreement at http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/WS_FTP/LE-EndUser-Lic.html.

When asked if you are a member of an education institution, government employee or contractor, click the button next to "A student....member of an the educational institution...". (See figure below).
When asked how you will use WS_FTP LE, check the box on the left that says "At Work" or "At School" as appropriate and the box on the right which says "For academic work". (See figure below).
WS_FTP LE is only free for use while you are at Boston College. It is not licensed for home use.
If you choose to install WSFTP LE into the same directory as the older version, the installer will delect that an older INI files exists at that location and ask if you want overwrite it. Click NO if you want to keep the FTP sites you have saved in the older version.

After installing WS_FTP on your hard drive, launch the application.
2. The first window to appear will be the Session Properties dialog box (see Figure 1 below), which will request information about what server to connect to. This is a tabbed dialog and you need to fill in some information on the first two tabs. You will only need to enter this information once and then it will be stored in the FTP software for future use.
On the first tab called General click once on the button labeled "New".
Fill in the boxes as shown below: Profile Name field: www2.bc.edu
Host Name/Address field: www2.bc.edu
Host Type: leave as Automatic detect
User ID field: enter your username in all lower case
Password field: leave it blank.

Click on the second tab at the top of the dialog box labeled Startup (see Figure 2).
Fill in the boxes as follows: Initial Remote Host Directory field: /usr/users/your_username/www
(replacing "your_username" with your login ID for the www2 server.)Initial Local Directory field: type in the path to the folder on your hard drive where you keep your web page files.
(Remember that paths on your Windows machine are indicated by backslashes rather than forward slashes. Your path might look something like: C:\My Documents\web pages. If you don't know the path to your files, leave the field blank and you can navigate to your folder later in the process.)

Once you have entered this information, click the OK button.
You should be prompted for you password which is your BC PIN. Type in your password and click OK. You will now be connected to www2. The information you entered into the General and Startup screens will be saved so future sessions will only require you to enter your password.
3. When you log into www2, you will see the FTP dialog box. Local files on you hard drive are displayed on the left hand side, and Remote files on the www2 server are displayed on the right hand side. (See Figure 3 below)
You will need to navigate through these two windows until your html files saved on your hard drive appear in the left window and your html files stored on the InfoEagle server appear on the right side.
If you entered the intial remote directory as shown in step 2 above, you will see your files listed on the right of the WSFTP LE window.
To add one of your local files to the server, highlight the file(s) you wish to place on the server in the "Local System" window on the left side.
Then click on the right arrow button between the Local System window and the Remote System window.
This will place your file on the InfoEagle web server in the folder whose contents are listed in the Remote System window (see Figure 3).
Copying files from the server to your hard drive is done the same way as adding files except you do the process in the opposite direction using the left arrow button.
Highlight the file(s) you wish to place on the hard drive in the "Remote System" window on the right side.
Then click on the left arrow button between the Local System window and the Remote System window.
This will place your file on the hard drive in the directory whose contents are listed in the Local System window (see Figure 3).

File permissions control who sees your web page. Your file permissions are usually fine when you upload files but sometimes, the bits for Group and Other access are turned off so you receive a "server error" mesage when trying to access your page.
To check or change your file permissions using WSFTP LE, click once to select the file in the remote system list
Right click the file to bring up a menu.
Choose chmod (UNIX) from the pop up menu.
Check off read, write and execute for Owner. Check off read and excecute to Group and Other. (see Figure 4)
Click OK

Be sure to be in the personal main directory /usr/users/username where username is your username. (See Fig. 5)

If you see something different, click on the green arrow until you see /usr/users/username, where "username" is YOUR username.Click on the DirInfo button in the lower right hand corner of the screen. (See Fig. 6)

A new window will appear. (See Fig. 7) The first line will say total xx, with "xx" being the amount the amount of space the files on your web site has used so far.

You can ignore the folders named .finderinfo, .resource, and Network Trash~ if they appear in your directory.
