Logging In

1. After installing WS_FTP on your hard drive, launch the application.

2. The first window to appear will be the Session Properties dialog box (see Figure 1 below), which will request information about what server to connect to. This is a tabbed dialog and you need to fill in some information on the first two tabs. You will only need to enter this information once and then it will be stored in the FTP software for future use.

  • On the first tab called General click once on the button labeled "New".

  • Fill in the boxes as shown below:

    Profile Name field: www2.bc.edu

    Host Name/Address field: www2.bc.edu

Host Type: leave as Automatic detect

User ID field: enter your username in all lower case

    Password field: leave it blank.

  • WS FTP LE Properties Dialog - General Tab
    (Figure 1)

  • Click on the second tab at the top of the dialog box labeled Startup (see Figure 2).

  • Fill in the boxes as follows:

Initial Remote Host Directory field: /usr/users/your_username/www
(replacing "your_username" with your login ID for the www2 server.)

Initial Local Directory field: type in the path to the folder on your hard drive where you keep your web page files.

(Remember that paths on your Windows machine are indicated by backslashes rather than forward slashes. Your path might look something like: C:\My Documents\web pages. If you don't know the path to your files, leave the field blank and you can navigate to your folder later in the process.)

  • WS FTP LE Properties Dialog - Startup Tab
    (Figure 2)

  • Once you have entered this information, click the OK button.

  • You should be prompted for you password which is your BC PIN. Type in your password and click OK. You will now be connected to www2. The information you entered into the General and Startup screens will be saved so future sessions will only require you to enter your password.
