Using Fetch* to FTP Files into www2

To FTP files into the www2 personal web server on a Macintosh, the Office of Information Technology recomends that you use Fetch 3.0.1 or higher

If you would like a copy of this page which is suitable for printing, please use this link to a PDF version of these instructions which you can view and print using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader is included with EagleNet Resources 1997 and later or you can download a free copy from the Adobe.com web site.

Download Fetch 3.0.3

*If you don't like Fetch, there are other FTP programs you can use. See the Information Technology FTP Clients page for more information.

1. After installing Fetch on your hard drive, launch the application.

2. The first window to appear will be the New Connection window, which will request information about what server to connect to, your User ID and your password. In the Host option, type in www2.bc.edu, in the User ID option, type in your BC username, and in the Password box, type in your BC PIN. Any information in the Directory option should be deleted. If you are comfortable typing directory paths, you can enter the path /usr/users/<username>/www into the directory box and skip step 3. (replace <username> with your BC username)

3. The next window to appear will be the FTP upload/download window. In this window you will need to double click on the www folder to enter into your directory on the web server. All files must be placed inside the www folder in order to appear on the web.

4. After double clicking on the www folder, you will be in your directory on the server. In this directory you can add and delete files. Your home page is default.html. Your home page must always have this name. If you want to create a new home page, replace the current default.html file with a new one called default.html.

To add a file to the server, click the Put File... button or drag the file from your hard drive into the file list in the dialog box. (drag and drop allows you to skip the dialog boxes in steps 5 and 6)

5. Using the Put File button will bring up a dialogue box, asking you to navigate to the file you wish to place on the server. Locate the desired file and click Open.

6. Another dialogue box will appear asking you in what format to place the file on the server. Select Text in the the Format pull down, and click OK. This will place your file on the server.

Checking File Permissions

File permissions control who sees your web page. Your file permissions are usually fine when you upload files, but sometimes the bits for Group and Everyone access are turned off so you receive a "server error" message when trying to access your page as a viewer.
