Course Description:

This course in designed to investigate various lenses of leadership through the use of case study. The structure used to examine leadership through case study will be the same format the students will be expected to use when taking their written comps. In that way, the course will also serve as preparation for the written comps. Students will be expected to organize into study groups and work cooperatively the entire semester on class assignments and in preparing for the written comps, which will be four hours in length and will occur the final class session.

Course Requirements:

Attendance and active participation is expected at all classes. Students will be graded pass/fail for the course.

Session Topics and Assignments:

9/11/01

Introduction to the course and expectations concerning the course.

• Students will learn how to approach a case study and to discuss leadership through the study of cases.

Students will review comp prep materials to insure that they all fully understand the expectations for passing written comps.

• Students will organize into study groups and plan a schedule that will result in total preparedness for the oral comps.

• Student groups will discuss how to prepare presentations of the 4 frames of organization discussed in Bolman and Deal.

 

Assignment:Each of 4 groups will prepare a complete overview of one of Bolman and Deal's four frames.

Discussion of the text How Can I Fix It? .

• Groups will present their overview of each of the four frames and discuss how they would apply the frames to a case study.

 

Assignment: Case #1, Case #3, Case #4

10/9/01

Students will discuss assigned cases using the 4 frames and follow up questions as a basis for their analysis of effective leadership.

Assignment: Case #8, Case #10, Case #17

10/23/01

Students will discuss assigned cases using the 4 frames and follow up questions as a basis for their analysis of effective leadership.

Assignment: Case # 5. Students will read the case and then write an analysis of the case using the four frames and follow up questions as the basis for their analysis. Students should bring 4 copies of their analysis to class.

11/6/01

Students will critique each other's written response to case #5 using the written comp rubric.

Assignment: Case #6. Students will read the case and then write an analysis of the case using the four frames and follow up questions as the basis for their analysis. Students should bring 4 copies of their analysis to class.

11/20/01

Students will critique each other's written response to case #6 using the written comp rubric.

12/4/01

Review and study session for written comps
