Cochran-Smith is the Immediate Past-President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA); she is served as AERA President in 2004-2005. She has been actively involved in AERA for more than two decades. She has served regularly during this time period as presenter, discussant, symposium chair, panel member, town meeting facilitator, and mentor for newcomers. Dr. Cochran-Smith was Vice President of AERA for Division K (Teaching and Teacher Education) from 1998-2000, a member of the AERA Council during the same period, and a member of the AERA Executive Board 1999-2000. She was a member of the AERA Publications Committee and Chair of the Publications Committee (2001-03). Dr. Cochran-Smith is also serving as the Co-Chair (with Ken Zeichner) of AERA's Panel on Research and Teacher Education. In 1996 and 1997, Dr. Cochran-Smith served on the National Program Committee for AERA, chaired Division K's program committee in 1997, and served as Program Chair for Section 4 of Division K (preservice education) in 1996. In 1997, Dr. Cochran-Smith received Division K's research award. Dr. Cochran-Smith was also a member of AERA's invited Commission on Research and Practice from 1992-95, which was begun under the AERA presidency of Ann Lieberman. Finally, Dr. Cochran-Smith has for many years been a reviewer and/or editorial board member for AERA journals. She has published her work in most of AERA's six journals, including Educational Researcher, AERJ, RER and RRE. Dr. Cochran-Smith has also participated in AERA's Editors' Roundtables sessions, providing information to potential contributors about the Journal of Teacher Education.
