Europe in 1942

The Second World War actually began on 7 July 1937 when troops of the Empire of Japan attacked the Republic of China . Over the next two years, numerous diplomatic crises flared and armed confrontation seemed inevitable. For most historians, Germany's attack upon Poland, on 1 September 1939 was the real beginning of a world conflagration that would eventually cost more than 50 million lives. This map shows the high-water mark of German victories in Europe in 1942.
