DALE A. HERBECK


Dale Herbeck, a professor in the Communication Department at Boston College, joined the faculty in 1985 after receiving his Ph.D. in Communication Studies at the University of Iowa. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Herbeck teaches courses on argumentation and debate, communication law and freedom of expression, and rhetorical theory and criticism. From 1985 through 1994, he served as Director of Boston College's nationally ranked Fulton Debating Society.

Dr. Herbeck is coauthor of Freedom of Speech in the United States (Strata, 2001 and 2005) and has contributed 30 book chapters and scholarly articles to such journals as Argumentation and Advocacy, Communication Research Reports, Forensic Educator, Free Speech Yearbook, International Journal of Argumentation, Journal of Communication Studies, and the National Forensic Journal. He has also presented more than 100 scholarly papers including presentations made before the National Communication Association, the International Communication Association, the International Society for Political Psychology, the International Society for the Study of Argumentation, the Eastern Communication Association, the Central States Communication Association, the Southern States Communication Association, and the Western States Communication Association. His scholarship has been recognized with the McGuffey Award from the Textbook and Academic Author's Association, the James Madison Award from the Southern States Communication Association, the Past President's Award from the Eastern Communication Association, and the Robert M. O'Neill Award from the Commission on Freedom of Expression. Herbeck also received the 2000 Teaching Award from the Boston College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in recognition of his excellence in the classroom.

Dr. Herbeck is active in a variety of professional associations. Past and present service includes President and National Council of the American Forensic Association; President and Board of Directors of the American Communication Association; Chair of the National Communication Association's Commission on Freedom of Expression; Executive Council of the Eastern Communication Association; and Editor of both Argumentation and Advocacy and the Free Speech Yearbook.
