TEXT: Interaction . (7ème édition) St. Onge et St. Onge, Boston: Thomson Heinle, 2007.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This summer Intensive Intermediate course will allow you to complete two semesters' work over the course of five weeks with Bordeaux and Paris as your classroom.  This is a great way to jump start your French, as you immerse yourself in the language and culture of two of the world's most exciting cities. The course will begin in Bordeaux, a town of 213,000.  Bordeaux has just been named a World Heritage city by UNESCO and is known for its stunningly beautiful architecture and rich history.  The Basque region, the Atlantic coastline, the Pyranees, miles of rolling vineyards are an hour or two away by train.  After a month in Bordeaux, honing your language skills, the group will move to Paris for its final week in the City of Lights. There you will explore all that Paris has to offer in terms of history and culture, from the Louvre, to the Musée d'Orsay, the Centre Pompidou, L'Institut du Monde Arabe, Notre Dame, Sacré Coeur, the Bastille and L'Arc de Triomphe.  You will discover the richness of multi-ethnic cultures as they are interwoven into life in the Métropole and will reflect on what culture means from different perspectives.   A weekend trip to Biarritz, in the Pays Basque (on the Atlantic coast near Spain), will allow you to explore the food, myths and landscapes of this unique region.  Throughout the program, short works of prose on aspects of daily French life will acquaint you with the essence of what it means to be French.

This course enables you to fulfill your foreign language requirement quickly, allowing you to qualify for enrollment in more advanced courses in the fall, further study or graduate work abroad.  In Intensive Intermediate French/Bordeaux and Paris, you will review previously learned vocabulary and grammar while continuing to develop your ability to express yourself in oral and written form.  You will spend 15 hours per week in language classes and sign a pledge to speak nothing but French while participating in the program, ensuring fast progress towards oral proficiency.

Prerequisites:  This 5 week, 6-credit course is designed for students who have placed into Intermediate French I on the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures online Placement Exam or who have completed one year of Elementary French or Intensive Elementary French at BC.
