COURSE
DESCRIPTION: The emphasis will be on developing practical knowledge
of the French language, as spoken by native speakers in contemporary
France. Our goal is to help students develop the skills necessary
to understand spoken and written French and to communicate clearly in
the language. This practical knowledge will be developed in the four
skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as in
the area of what is now referred to as cultural competence. What
engages
students in this course is the opportunity to use French to communicate
their personal views about a variety of subjects, as they exchange
information with their peers in a relatively intimate setting (no more
than 22 students per class!). Students will also learn to glean
information from literary and
cultural texts and will have the opportunity to discuss current events,
Francophone customs and culture from an international perspective.
Moreover, this cultural analysis will lead to a deeper understanding of
American culture and a broadening of perspectives. Students are
strongly
encouraged to immerse themselves in the language outside of class as
well by attending free activities at the Maison française and to take
advantage of Boston's French and Francophone connections.

CLASS
PARTICIPATION, DEVOIRS QUOTIDIENS AND ABSENCE POLICY: In order to
excel in class participation and to make the most of this course,
students must be present and must prepare the items on the
syllabus for a given day. Students should always be prepared to
turn in work listed
on the syllabus. Items listed
as "pour aller plus loin" are not obligatory, but are available
for those who want to challenge themselves and learn more about a
topic. The class participation grade will be based on
active participation, preparedness and homework assignments. The
department considers that any absences over and above 3, are
unexcused. Subsequent missed classes, unless officially excused
by
the Dean's Office, will result in point loss from the Class
Participation grade. Students are wholly responsible for making up any
missed work promptly following an absence. Cell phones are banned
in class as they are detrimental to
effective class
participation.
The H1N1 Virus: Given the possibility that students may be affected by the H1N1 virus this semester, accommodations will be made for those students when it comes to attendance and assignments. It is university policy that students experiencing flu symptoms isolate themselves until 24 hours after their symptoms have subsided.
DISCUSSION:
Students will participate in an on-line "discussion" group to be
accessed through Blackboard Vista. Discussions will not be
conversational, but rather reactions to prompts related to readings in
Interaction and La première gorgée de
bière. Each instructor will post questions on a
given text in her discussion folder. Students click on the
instructor's message to read it and then click reply to respond.
There will be a total of four discussion topics during the
semester. The focus will be on creativity, self-expression and
developing the ability to use vocabulary and grammar accurately and
appropriately. Discussion
due dates: 9/21, 10/7, 10/28 and 11/13. Learn about typing French
accents on your computer.
TESTS (CONTRÔLES): There will be 4 unit tests. The lowest test grade will be dropped. There will be absolutely no makeup tests. The tests are limited to 40 minutes each and will each have oral as well as written components. Students will be tested on grammar, vocabulary, literary readings and culture.
CAHIER
ET LABORATOIRE: The online workbook can be found at www.quia.com/books. In
order to set up your online workbook account, you'll need two key
codes. One is your personal key code provided with your textbook,
the other is a key code for your class, which your instructor will
provide. The workbook is divided into two parts: one focusing on
listening comprehension and pronunciation and the other made up of
written exercises to reinforce grammar and vocabulary addressed in the
textbook. These activities will help you to prepare for each
chapter test. Completed workbook assignments are to be submitted
online on test
days. Workbooks
may be submitted until midnight on the due date.
CINÉMATHÈQUE:
Le cinéma est un
langage
universel. There are things you can learn about authentic
culture, linguistic cadence and universal truths that can be quickly
accessed and understood through film. Movies provide students
with
cultural immersion and context. Students will see three movies of
their own choosing over the course of the semester. All films
must
be by Francophone filmmakers and in French. African and Caribbean
movies where French is one of the primary languages used in the film
are
also acceptable choices. American movies or cartoons dubbed in
French are not eligible for this assignment. Students must use
the Fiche
technique provided
here
to complete the assignment and hand it in on the date listed below in
the syllabus.

ONLINE
ORAL TEST: Students' oral skills will be assessed informally in
class and formally through an online oral test. Students will
receive a voice e-mail from their instructor with a series of personal
questions (like those developed in the Lexique
personnel sections of each chapter). Students may listen
to
the questions as often as necessary, take notes and then respond
through
voicemail by clicking "reply". Reponses should be
listened
to before clicking send. A microphone is necessary to complete
this assignment. Most computers have built-in microphones.
If your computer does not have a built in microphone or you experience
software issues, please record your response in the Language Lab in
Lyons 313 on one of the many computers available there.
FINAL EXAM: A two-hour comprehensive written exam will be given on Friday, December 18, 2009 from 4 to 6 p.m. It will cover Chapters 1-5 in the textbook. Literary texts in La première gorgée de bière will not be included on the Final Exam. Please note that the date and time of the final are different from those given in the course guide. Students with two or more exams on that date may sign up to take the Makeup (date and time to be announced).
In
computing grades, the following numerical equivalents for the 12 letter
grades will be used:
| A 4.00 (94 -100) | B- 2.67 (80 - 83) | D+ 1.33 (67 - 69) |
| A- 3.67 (90 - 93) | C+ 2.33 (77 - 79) | D 1.00 (64 - 66) |
| B+ 3.33 (87 - 89) | C 2.00 ( 74 - 76) | D- 0.67 (60 - 63) |
