This independent study in Paris is a 3-credit course designed for the post-intermediate level French student who would like to strengthen and renew their language skills while being immersed in the language and culture of France.  The goal of this course is to reinforce and review previously learned grammar and vocabulary, teach level-appropriate new structures and deepen the student's understanding of French language and culture through the exploration of a series of literary essays, monuments and museums of Paris.  The student will hone her writing skills through journaling and creative essays.

ABSENCE POLICY:
The department considers that any absence over and above 2 (during the summer semester), are unexcused absences.  Subsequent missed classes, unless officially excused by the Dean's Office, will result in point loss from the Class Participation grade. Students are wholly responsible for making up any missed work promptly following an absence. Late work will NOT be accepted.  In order to excel in class participation and to make the most of this course, students must be present and must have prepared the items on the syllabus for a given day.

WEEKLY PRESENTATIONS:
- Students will present every week in the intermediate class. They will have a choice of topics which will be discussed both in the intermediate and advanced classes.
- Students will present once a week in the advanced class. They will pick a topic related to the material which will be covered in class and find more information on that topic.

JOURNAL:   
Students will keep a personal journal to be handed in twice a week. Three entries, of  8 to 10 lines each must be made for each journal. In the first two entries, students should talk about every day life, family, friends or other topics of interest to them. The third entry should be based on one of the following a French or Francophone film or the analysis of an aspect of French culture from an American perspective.

ESSAYS:
Students will choose a topic to write a 3 page essay to be handed in on Tuesday every week. The topic will deal with a cultural, literary, or historical aspect of France.

ORAL EXIT INTERVIEW:
The instructor will conduct 20-minute individual oral interviews with students, to beheld in the classroom.  Students will receive individual appointment times and all oral interviews will take place from 11:00 to 12:00 on Friday, June 25, 2010. The oral interview will be conversational in style and students will ask as well as answer questions on a variety of topics of personal interest, so that the instructor can provide feedback on each student's strengths and weaknesses orally. The goal of the oral interview is to assess each students progress towards oral proficiency on a global level.
