HISTORY 182: AMERICAN CIVILIZATION SINCE 1877
Spring 1999, M&F 10
This course provides an overview of American history from Reconstruction
to the present. Focusing on the emergence of the United States as
a leading industrial and military power, the course examines both national
leaders as well as ordinary Americans of different race, class, and gender
groups. In terms of readings, we will pay particular attention to
primary sources as a means of developing critical reading, writing, and
interpretive skills.

Course Requirements:
The course will include two lectures per week plus a Wednesday discussion
section in which we will discuss assigned readings for the week (excluding
the textbook). Regular attendance and participation is required;
excessive absences will have a serious and detrimental impact on your grade.
Class requirements include an in-class midterm, a final, and two 6-8
page papers. In addition, students will prepare three short written
assignments of their own choosing based on weekly reading assignments.
Grading will be based on the following formula:
