My name is
Chris Kelly, and I am a sociology graduate student at Boston College. I have a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Mississippi (2005) and I am currently
working on my Ph.D. My
research interests include the following:
·
Sociology of knowledge and ideology
·
Qualitative methods
·
Discourse analysis
·
Gay and lesbian studies
·
Postcolonial studies
·
Palestinian society
·
Spirituality
·
Islam
My current
research investigates social dimensions of knowledge formation among student
activists. During the summer of
2006, I lived in the country of Jordan for two months while studying the Arabic
language, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the Council of American
Overseas Research Centers. I also
participate regularly in faith-based service trips, engage in activism for
Palestinian human rights, and am currently seeking to promote GLBTQ interfaith
dialogue at my university.
I am also a
recent convert to Islam. I made
shahadah—recited the Islamic declaration of faith (“There is no God
but Allah, and Muhammad is his servant and messenger.”)—back in
September of 2006, during the month of Ramadan. You may read my personal conversion
story here;
it’s not exactly the most orthodox
of conversions, but it’s mine. I remain grateful to Allah (subhana wa ta`ala)
for bringing the peace of Islam into my life. Alhamdulillah!
