Before beginning the summer course, here are a few things that you should know:
- The program that we use is called Destinos;
the first half of the course, which we will not use, is at the
Elementary level. The second half, which is where we pick it up, is the
Intermediate level. The textbook that we use covers the entire series.
The workbook is split into two halves, and we will use only the second
volume.
- You are expected to be able to use the Present Indicative fairly well. If you need to review this, use any first-year Spanish book to do so before the Intermediate course begins.
- You must be familiar with the Rules of Accent in Spanish.
- You should be familiar with the past tenses preterit & imperfect.
You do not have to master these, however, and we will review them at
the beginning of the course. The following two links are materials that
we will use in the first couple of classes:
Preterit Formation, Past Tenses. The worksheets that are due for homework in the first couple of days are here: Past Tense Review.
- You should have a basic vocabulary; again, any first-year book
will do for review. In addition, there are some specific vocabulary
words that you should know from the first half of Destinos. Click here for the list.
- Destinos is a
video series. Since we will not be using the first half in class, you
may want to view it as preparation for the second half. This is
optional, but may provide a good review of the present and past tenses,
as well as some of the vocabulary that carries over into the
Intermediate level. You can view the videos here.
Viewing them is free, but you will need to create a login the first
time. The first half is episodes 1-26; the second half (which we will
view in class) is episodes 27-52. Click here for a summary of the first half of the series.
The textbook we will use is Destinos, an Introduction to Spanish. Be sure that you purchase the Alternate edition of the Second edition (2002). Other versions will not work with this program.
You will also need to purchase the Workbook Vol. 2 for Destinos (again, be sure to get the Alternate edition of the Second edition).
