on the Revolution
The Industrial Revolution changed the face of Europe. Not only did
it change the
nature of work but it changed the nature of work in Europe. Fewer people
worked in
agriculture and more in manufacturing. Machines replaced humans and as
a result,
population patterns likewise changed. Cities grew dramatically and
for the first time
cities in Europe had over a million inhabitants.
Workers began to express their solidarity as workers. They organized into
groups
that were broadly based and therefore more powerful than past workers'
groups.
Workers began to think of themselves as a group and society began to recognize
them as such.
Another reaction to the Industrial Revolution was a change in peoples'
intellectual
convictions. The laissez-faire system did not meet workers' needs. The
state, as
a result, needed and became more interventionist, trying to remove the
worst abuses.
Karl Marx, drawing on early strands of Socialism articulated in a
new and inviting
way. Marxism gave a voice to the new proletarian class created by
the industrialization
