Authors/Texts: Nathaniel Hawthorne/The House of the Seven Gables and The Scarlet Letter
The site contains both the House of the Seven Gables and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Birthplace. The House of the Seven Gables is a mansion that was erected in 1668 by Captain John Turner. The house was later sold to the Ingersoll Family during the time of the Great Age of Sail. Nathaniel Hawthorne even wrote a fictitious novel on the House of the Seven Gables. Therefore, this 300 year old mansion is the site of architectural, maritime, and literary legacies.
