This course will introduce you to the art and
architecture of the ancient Mediterranean
world. We shall concentrate on the major art
works and monuments of the three civi-
lizations that arose here: the ancient Near
East (primarily Mesopotamia), Egypt and
Classical Greece. By studying the sculpture,
pottery, seals, architectural remains and
wall painting of these cultures, we shall gain
a better understanding of those civilizations,
the political and religious ideologies that shaped
them, and the evolution of their art styles.
