Who am I?

I am a Cultural and Child-development Psychologist by training.  I have a B.Sc. in Comparative Psychology, a M.Sc. in Psychobiology and Animal Behavior, and a Ph.D. in Development Psychology with specialization in Developmental Pediatrics and Cross-cultural Psychology.  My research has focused on studying adult decision making in regard to child rearing practices in the Congo Basin, Guatemala, and the USA, and I am particularly interested in understanding how individuals learn to become functioning members of their society.

In the past three years I have become increasingly involved in seeking ways to better integrate the research of psychologists into policies that impact children and their families, and consequently I now spend part of my time as a consultant for the US Government’s Administration of Children, Youth and Families.

In addition to my research on children's development amongst the Efe and Lese in the Ituri forest of northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, I and  several other research colleagues started the Ituri Forest Peoples Fund - a special project of Cultural Survival - to help the Efe and Lese to provide their children with health care, and the opportunity to attend primary school.
