Description
Theology of the sacraments primarily as embodied in Roman Catholic
liturgical tradition, through study of official documents, history,
contemporary systematic theologies, and insights from the social
sciences. While focused on Catholicism, the nature of this subject also
requires attention to the theologies, practices, and histories of other
Christian ecclesial bodies, as well as some attention to Judaism.
Methodological questions will be highlighted for this sub-discipline in
systematic theology.
Requirements
- Attendance at all class sessions, with readings prepared and
active participation are normally expected.
- For Part II of the course, all students will bring a one-page,
single-spaced (approx. 500-600 word) précis of the readings to
each of those four class sessions.
- Students may opt to write a research paper (approx. 20 pages) on
a topic worked out with the professor (highly recommended for PhD
students). A proposal (topic and working bibliography) would need to be
worked out with and approved by the professor by 10/23/08.
- Alternatively, students may opt to write a précis for six
of the remaining eight class sessions, plus submit a final synthesis
paper (approx. 8 – 10 pages) integrating Chauvet’s theology and one of
the specific rites from Parts III through V.
