The debate:
Did Homer really Exist?
Did Homer truly write The Odyssey and
The Iliad?
Was Homer actually blind?
As this debate continues on indefinitely, we shall
for the moment ignore all the previous raised questions and take a moment
to reflect on the eloquent similes that are inherent in these works. Here
are two examples of the so-called "Homeric Simile" :
"The two immortals stepped briskly
as wild doves, quivering, keen to defend the fighting men of Argos."
-Fagles, Iliad 189.896-'7
"As
hinds of heifers in springtime, sated in pasture, bound about a meadow,
so
they, holding up the folds of their lovely garments, darted down the hollow
path,
and
their hair like a crocus flower streamed about their shoulders."
-To
Dionysus (Lacuna) II. 169-183
