Academic Projects

The following are projects completed as a part of my regular coursework at the Harvard Graduate School of Education:

Dilemma Explorer

Dilemma Explorer Logo The Dilemma Explorer is an online collaborative tool that allows learners to explore and critically examine dilemmas in a scaffolded manner. Designed for middle- and high-school students and their teachers, the Dilemma Explorer online tool helps to guide learners through the inquiry process of exploring a dilemma, allows them to organize supporting material in a variety of ways helping them to focus the issues, and then encourages them to come to a conclusion and articulate their position on the dilemma. Feedback from peers and teachers at all stages of the exploration is possible, challenging the learner to further critically examine the process.

While the Dilemma Explorer does not address any particular subject matter specifically, it can be applied to a broad range of knowledge domains. The experience with Dilemma Explorer can culminate in a variety of different performances, depending on the requirements and expertise of the learners and teachers. Formative Evaluations

Conducted as group projects, we developed the evaluation instruments, ran focus groups with elementary school teachers and one-on-one interviews with elementary students, analyzed the collected data, and wrote full evaluation reports. The first evaluation concerned a new teacher professional development video series produced by the Science Media Group at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Annenberg/CPB Channel satellite network. The second evaluation concerned an interactive educational Web site, in the process of being developed by the Plimoth Plantation Living History Museum in Plymouth, MA, exploring the history of the "First Thanksgiving" of 1621.

Dilemmas in Civil Rights Curriculum

This middle-school curriculum exploring topics in the Civil Rights era was designed in partnership with a classmate and middle-school teacher. Based on the Teaching for Understanding framework, this curriculum explores topics such as:

This curriculum additionally showcases the use of various technologies and media in an effective and meaningful way. That is, the Dilemmas in Civil Rights curriculum is designed so that technology is not used just for the sake of using technology. The curriculum rationale paper was written entirely by me. A History of Us Grant Proposal

This fictitious grant proposal addressed to the Rural School and Community Trust was written for a course on integrating technology into the learning process. The objective of this grant is to fund a program for seventh and eighth grade students that utilizes technology and fosters a partnership between a community, a school, and a museum.
