AIMS
Knowledge of a foreign language and its cultures opens the door to the global community intellectually and professionally.  Learning a foreign language will help you gain new perspectives, while assimilating other ways of perceiving the world.  Elementary Spanish offers a practical knowledge of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language as spoken by native speakers.  This practical knowledge will be developed in five areas:  listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural competence.

Specific objectives include attaining at least a novice high level of oral proficiency or the ability to participate in basic conversations using learned material to handle simple needs and express everyday courtesies.  You will begin to talk about yourself and your preferences, activities and interests in present, future and past time. You will learn to greet others, introduce yourself, handle basic social situations, obtain food and clothing and talk about a variety of topics of common interest.  Attention will be paid to fostering more spontaneous and creative use of the language and to asking and answering questions.  You will also be introduced to the many cultures that comprise the Spanish-speaking world in Spain, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and in the United States.  Reading and writing skills at a commensurate level will be developed and practiced.

COURSE PARTICULARS

NOTE: If you should have flu symptoms, isolate yourself and minimize contact within residence halls or apartments and avoid all public places, including classrooms, the library, the computer center, and department and faculty offices. Flu sufferers should isolate themselves for at least 24 hours after their fever or other symptoms disappear without the aid of fever - or symptom-reducing medicines.

  1. Prerequisites:  This is a beginning course for those who have not studied Spanish previously or those who have taken the Placement Test and have placed into this level. If you are unsure about your placement, see Debbie Rusch in Lyons 308. If you have studied two or more years of Spanish and have not taken the placement exam, please do so ASAP. To access the placement exam, click here.
  2. RL017: Concurrent enrollment in RL017 is mandatory for students with no previous high school Spanish courses.  RL017 is also strongly suggested for athletes in session or students with a demanding work or extra curricular schedule. If you have had Spanish before, but feel that you could greatly benefit from this course, you should sign up for it. See see Debbie Rusch in Lyons 308 if you have any questions. Please register for this course ASAP since the sections fill quickly.
  3. Attendance:  Classroom attendance is required.  The Department permits no make-up quizzes and allows only three absences.  Additional absences will affect final grade and excessive absences may result in failure.  Students with illnesses will be excused with a written excuse from a physician or the Dean's office as will athletes for scheduled athletic events when instructor has been notified in advance.
  4. Written Assignments:  Written assignments are to be turned in on the days indicated or no credit will be given.  You should not consult with anyone else (including tutors) other than your instructor when preparing these (see Academic Integrity).  Using a dictionary is fine, but use of an online translator will be considered a violation of the university policy on Academic Integrity. Workbook/Lab Manuals must be self corrected in contrasting color ink and will be handed in on indicated days. The answers to the workbook can be accessed via Blackboard Vista. One may listen to the audio online via Blackboard Vista using a computer connected to the BC network. To listen to the audio online, go to the Language Lab web site and click on "Online Audio Programs." If you choose the online option, answer keys may be accessed from the RL015 Blackboard Vista home page after you complete activities. Lab assignments may also be listened to in the Language Lab or audio may be copied for use at home. Answers to the Lab Manual are in the Language Lab (313 Lyons) or are available via Blackboard Vista. If a daily assignment is not turned in, in addition to not receiving credit for the work one point will be subtracted from your final grade for each missing assignment. Therefore, if your average is 87.345 (B+) and you have not turned in two assignments, you will receive a grade of 85.345 (B).
  5. Optional Web Activities and CD-ROM:  See explanation at end of syllabus.
  6. Make-up Policy:  No make-up exams or quizzes will be given except for medical reasons or excused absences for travel related to a sponsored and pre-approved BC event.  A written excuse from a physician or the Dean's office must be provided before the make-up is administered.
  7. Final Exam: THIS COURSE HAS A DEPARTMENTAL FINAL EXAM THAT WILL BE GIVEN ON: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18th AT 4:00 P.M.  This date is different from the time and date indicated in the Course Listing. The make-up exam will be given to qualifying students Saturday, Dec. 19th at 4:00pm (place TBA). No exams will be given early.
  8. Any person receiving an Incomplete in RL015 must make up all work in the first 6 weeks of the second semester. All incompletes automatically change to a grade of "F" after that time.
  9. Extra credit: Throughout the semester there will be numerous opportunities to receive extra credit. All will give you practice with the vocabulary and structures presented as well as further your knowledge of history, art, architecture, etc. and everyday customs of the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. You can get a maximum of 2 points counting towards your final grade (out of 100 points) though extra credit. Each extra credit assignment you do will count 1/2 point. Please note: you can do all or none of the extra credit assignments. If you chose to do more than 4 you will only get "credit" for four of them, but you will gain something more valuable than extra credit, you will gain knowledge should you chose to do more.

Ver y escribir / hablar:
This is 5% of your final grade for the course.  You have two options:

Option #1:

You may view the movie El crimen ferpecto at any time.  Prior to watching the movie, go to this web site and print out the activities.  Do the Antes de ver section to better prepare yourself to see the movie. Read through the Mientras ves section prior to seeing the movie and complete it while watching the movie. All activities may be done at any time, but the final composition portion should not be written until you finish Chapter 5. When writing the composition portion of the assignment, do the following:

  1. Take notes in Spanish.
  2. Write your rough draft.
  3. Check to see if you used words like por eso, y, también, and pero to connect ideas and enrich the interest level.  If you didn't, add them now.  Also check to see that all adjectives and all articles (el / la, los/las, un / una, unos/unas) agree with the nouns they modify.  If they don't, fix them now.
  4. Write the final copy on a computer and double space. Hand it in to your instructor with all drafts.

All activities should be turned in on Wed., Nov. 18th. The movie will be shown a week earlier on Wednesday, Nov. 11th at 7:00 in Fluton 511. NOTE: You can view the movie in O'Neill (but can not check it out and must view it in the mediua center), you can rent it at some video stores, you can view it in the Language Lab in 313 Lyons (you can not check it out and must view it there).

Option #2:
Have a face-to-face oral interview with your instructor. This will be similar to a conversation. The oral interview is to help your instructor evaluate your speaking ability.  It is also a chance for you to see just how much you have learned.  In the oral interview you will speak individually with your instructor and the conversation will be conducted entirely in Spanish.  The questions you will be asked are quite open-ended and you will be expected to say as much as you can.  You will be asked questions relating to topics that have been covered in class.  You may also be asked to role play a situation.  You will be graded on how well you understand and how well you get your message across (fluency, pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, appropriate word choice, appropriateness of response, and creativity). Please keep in mind that your instructor is giving a large number of interviews.  Because of this, it is important that you keep your appointment and be on time. Each instructor will set up an interview schedule.

Crédito extra:  If you choose to view the movie and do the activities, you may schedule an oral interview with your instructor for extra credit AND if you choose to do the interview for 5% of your grade, you may view the movie and do the activities for extra credit.

IMÁGENES CD-ROM AND WEB SITE

When studying a language, one key element is practice, practice, practice. This helps to move information from short- to long-term memory. It is also important to study in small bits vs. cramming the night before a quiz or an exam. The Imágenes Web Site and CD-ROM are tools, that if used diligently can really help you make progress in your study of Spanish by increasing your accuracy, helping you attain greater retention of material presented, increasing your knowledge of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, raising your grade, and giving you the skills needed to succeed in future Spanish courses. Being more prepared you are for each day of class will also increase your confidence level and make you feel more comfortable in the class.

The Imágenes CD-ROM came free of charge with your textbook. If you purchased a used book and did not purchase a CD-ROM, you may access the CD-ROM contents on the Internet and there are copies of the Imágenes CD-ROM in the Language Lab in 313 Lyons that you may use. The CD-ROM activities can be used while studying a chapter or as a review for quizzes and exams. Much of the content is interactive and self-checking. The organization of the CD-ROM is similar to the organization of each chapter: Vocabulario I, Hacia la comunicación I, Nuevos horizontes, Vocabulario II, Hacia la comunicación II, and each chapter ends with a section titled Un poco de todo. If you click on a section, a series of activities will be displayed that provide a wealth of practice. If used consistently, the CD-ROM can be a most helpful tool to better master the basics of the language while also gaining additional cultural knowledge. To access the CD-ROM from the Internet, do the following:

  1. Go to this site: http://college.cengage.com/languages/spanish/caycedo/claro/6e/improve/improve1.html.
  2. Click on the last item in the list entitled More Practice.
  3. Select the Chapter you want from menu in the pop-up box and select the item you would like to practice.

The Imágenes Web Site provides additional practice with chapter vocabulary and grammar as well as cultural information.

  1. To move between chapters, use the drop down menu.
  2. The Preliminary Chapter has only the ACE the Test section, other chapters have Improve Your Grade and ACE the Test.
  3. By clicking on Improve Your Grade, you can access the Flashcards which allow you to practice vocabulary and verb conjugations without using English. These can be done WHILE you do a chapter and/or as review before exams or quizzes.
  4. The ACE Practice Tests provide guided practice with each chapter's grammar and vocabulary. These can be done WHILE you do a chapter and/or as review before exams or quizzes.
  5. By clicking on Improve Your Grade, you will see the WEB Search activities. These use vocabulary and grammar presented in each chapter to help you read web sites created for and by Spanish speakers vs. written for a student of Spanish. Your knowledge of the language will help you comprehend and answer questions while learning cultural information about the Spanish-speaking world.
  6. By clicking on Improve Your Grade, you will see the Web Link section that provides additional links for you to learn more about cultural information presented in each chapter.
  7. By clicking on ACE the Test, you will see Ace Video Activities in chapters 2, 4, and 6. This section contains additional activities based on excerpts from the chapter video component.

HELPFUL INFORMATION ON THE WWW

  1. Want to know how to type Spanish characters (á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, ñ, ¿, ¡ )?  Click here for instructions.
  2. If you need to brush up on your English grammar try this site.
  3. This site contains an on-line, bilingual dictionary.  Remember that when looking up an English word to find the Spanish equivalent, do not always grab the first translation you see. Read all possible translations and double check your choice by looking it up in Spanish as well. To look up a word in Spanish, simply type in the Spanish word and read all possible translations, keeping in mind the context of the sentence where you read or heard the Spanish word. It is possible to download this to your computer by following the directions on the site.
  4. Having trouble finding the correct conjugation for a verb? Look up a verb in the bilingual dictionary and click on the word Conjugator at the top, center of the page. The forms you will use this semester include: gerundio (leyendo), participio (leído), presente (lee), imperfecto (leía), pretérito (leyó), presente del subjuntivo (que lea), imperativo (lea Ud.). Please note that there are other forms listed that you will learn in future study of Spanish, with the exception of the future subjunctive which is not used in modern Spanish.
  5. Improve your pronunciation using a site prepared by the University of Iowa.

TUTORING
The trick to learning a foreign language is to NEVER GET BEHIND and to seek help the minute you feel a concept isn't clear.  REMEMBER that your instructor is your best source for individual tutoring.  You should take advantage of this and see your instructor during office hours.  If you are unable to meet with your instructor during office hours, see him/her to arrange another time.  If you are seeing your instructor and still feel you need extra help, BC makes tutoring available for all students.  IMPORTANT: Tutors are instructed not to help with compositions or with open-ended workbook activities. It is a violation of the BC Academic Integrity Policy to do so. Tutors can be found through the Connors Family Learning Center at O'Neill Library (552-0611) and Learning Resources for Student Athletes in Conte (552-8533).  You must call first to make an appointment.

REMEMBER: Always see your instructor as well as a tutor. Also note that a tutor does not do homework or correct compositions for you.  The purpose of a tutor is to provide additional explanations to help clarify concepts and to provide you with additional practice to help assimilate these concepts.

CASA HISPÁNICA
The Casa hispánica, located in Voute, is a place for people to gather to participate in events that have to do with the Spanish language and Latino cultures. Students can live at the Casa hispánica anytime after the Freshman year.  A calendar of events is available in the main office of the Department of Romance Languages at 304 Lyons.  Elementary students may be especially interested in the Latino movie series since most have English subtitles.  All movies are feature length films, are free of charge, and offer a unique view of Latino cultures.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS
BC offers many opportunities to study abroad.  There are summer, semester, and academic year programs in a number of countries including Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain.  This is the best way to sharpen your linguistic skills while immersing yourself in the culture of another country.  Being able to list study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country on a résumé is a valuable asset.  To obtain information, contact the Office of International Programs (552-3827). NOTE: It is best (but may not be mandatory for all programs) to have completed at least four semesters of Spanish prior to going abroad to study. Intermediate Spanish is offered at BC in the summer and a six credit intensive Intermediate Spanish course is offered during the Fall semester. Although completion of Intermediate is the minimum requirement for many programs abroad, the more you can learn prior to studying abroad, the more you will get from the experience.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
For information about up coming lectures, the Spanish major, the Hispanic Studies minor, or how to transfer credits from other institutions see the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures homepage . Many freshmen and sophomore students of Elementary Spanish combine studies at BC and study abroad to complete a Hispanic Studies minor. Click on your class to get more information: Freshmen - - - Sophomores. If you are interested in majoring in Hispanic Studies and are a freshman, this is possible. See Debbie Rusch to discuss how this can be done since it requires careful planning.
