Mass Coalition Objective 1

Increase the participation of Arts & Sciences faculty in teacher education to ensure strong content knowledge

Objective 1 aims to increase the involvement of Art and Sciences faculty in all facets of teacher education to improve content knowledge. This work is considered core to the mission to the colleges/universities within the Coalition. Below are listed the main Coalition activities that work towards this this goal.

Coalition Activities

Newly engaged Arts & Sciences faculty include pedagogy strategies in their subject matter course curricula

  • Boston College/Boston Public Schools
    • Biology, English, Fine Arts, foreign language faculty integrate teaching strategies into subject matter courses
  • Northeastern U/Boston Public Schools
    • Math faculty designed program for math teachers on waivers to meet state licensure regulations
    • Science faculty developing similar program for science teachers on waivers
  • UMass Amherst/Springfield Public Schools
    • Math faculty and psychometricians developing math literacy program at Gerena

Some content and teacher education courses are co-taught by A&S and Education faculty

  • Boston College/Boston Public Schools
    • Teacher Education Council includes the A&S Dean and some faculty and meets twice a year
  • Clark University/Worcester Public Schools
    • Co-teach in “Curriculum and Knowing” institutes for teachers, MA & MAT candidates
    • Participate in “Ways of Knowing” course review and revision
A&S faculty continue to engage in the work of schools
  • Boston College/Boston Public Schools
    • Biology faculty at Urban Ecology Institute work with new science faculty in schools
    • Foreign Language faculty set up and instruct on use of curriculum websites
    • Boston College students telementor Brighton H.S. students in writing under the supervision of English college faculty
  • Clark University/Worcester Public Schools
    • Participate on K-16 Curriculum teams in core disciplines
    • Provide direct instruction and project supervision to University Park students, e.g. Shakespeare theater seminar
  • Lesley University/Dever School, Boston Public Schools
    • Psychology faculty works with 5th grade girls and parents on health related issues
  • Northeastern U/Boston Public Schools
    • Matching A&S expertise with partner school needs by using a Coalition of Essential Schools protocol, Internal Circle/External Circle, to identify and design courses for teachers
  • Wheelock College/Boston Public Schools
    • Math faculty doing sabbatical work in schools observing teacher interns for math content knowledge and how it impacts effective teaching

A&S faculty take a greater role in the development and assessment of teacher candidates and beginning teachers

  • Boston College/Boston Public Schools
    • English faculty mentor 8 student teachers at Brighton High School
  • UMass Boston/Boston Public Schools
    • Higher Education faculty are investigating beliefs and attitudes regarding work with urban schools and preparing urban teachers
