Mass Coalition Objective 3

Improve instruction in literacy across the content areas both in teacher education and in our partnering public schools

Objective 3 works towards better preparing teacher candidates to teach literacy in Pk-12 classrooms. The goal of Objective 3 is gains in student literacy in partnership schools.

Coalition Activities
Teacher education programs continue to emphasize and integrate literacy across all content areas and assess teacher candidates for this knowledge and practice
  • Clark University/Worcester Public Schools
    • Writing to learn, Learning to Write Institute, Summer 2002, for k-12 mentor teachers and master’s students, with monthly follow-up meetings during the school year
    • Literacy Across the Curriculum summer institute for secondary teachers and MA & MAT students
    • Literacy Development Course for elementary teacher candidates
    • Literacy development seminars for teachers on-site during school year examine practice through ‘rounds
Partnerships continue to focus on implementing effective literacy strategies across the content areas in pk-12 classrooms
  • Boston College/Boston Public Schools
    • E-mail tutoring for writing for Brighton High School students
    • Bilingual study group for teacher interns
    • Instructional Leadership teams focus on literacy in all subject areas
  • Clark University/Worcester Public School
    • Yellow Brick Road literacy group formed for shared and guided path to mixed readings
    • Literacy Workshop block period (94 min.) for 9th graders instituted
  • Lesley University/Dever School, Boston
    • Literacy course taught for first time at Dever in August 03
    • Children’s Literature course scheduled so Dever faculty can participate
    • Northeastern University/Boston Public Schools
    • Continue to work with three partner schools to build literacy programs
  • UMass Amherst/Springfield Public Schools
    • Gerena School expanding math literacy program and working with psychometricians to create a performance index for student work
Partnerships continue to evaluate k-12 student achievement data from local and national assessments and modify literacy strategies and programs in the schools, universities and community based upon the findings
  • Clark University/Worcester Public Schools
    • Representatives of small school design teams meet bimonthly to discuss and assess literacy strategies and outcomes
  • Lesley University/Dever School, Boston Public Schools
    • Analyzed drop in MCAS math scores to understand where students lack sufficient content knowledge; identified teaching weaknesses and are devising new teaching strategies with literacy coach.
  • Wheelock College/Boston Public Schools
    • Ongoing formative assessment of literacy programs at Young Achievers in Math & Science
    • Work with teachers to manage and utilize vast amount of student data to improve and focus classroom instruction and see the need to prepare preservice teachers to analyze and use data in their teaching
