Mass Coalition Objective 4

Recruit, train, and retain cohorts of ethnically diverse beginning teachers

Objective 4 aims to increase the percentage of ethnically diverse students who enroll in and complete MassCoalition urban teacher preparation programs. Furthermore, it works to have a greater number of teacher graduates hired by urban schools. Objective 4 also established support for beginning teachers in partner schools by college/university.

Coalition Activities
Partnerships continue to recruit a diverse group of students into urban teacher preparation programs.
  • Boston College/Boston Public Schools
    • Donovan Urban Teacher Education Program successfully recruited 45% students of color
  • Clark University/Worcester Public Schools
    • Received US DOE Title II Teacher Quality Recruitment Grant to recruit and support more diverse teacher candidates. 17 minority students have been accepted into program
    • Developing joint admissions process for teacher licensure programs
    • School and college faculty and community representatives participate in interview and selection process of new M.A. applicants. Leaders of 3 minority groups most prominent in Worcester, African-American, Asian-American and Latino, part of Teacher Recruitment team and participated in the selection process of MAT applicants
  • Lesley University/Dever School, Boston Public Schools
    • Partnership Director attended all university wide teacher education recruitment sessions
    • A full cohort for 03-04 academic year has been recruited with 11% students of color
    • More internship programs are in place in the overall Teacher Education Programs at Lesley based upon the successful work of the internship program at the Dever School
  • Northeastern University/Boston Public Schools
    • Held second “Educating the Black Child” conference for educators in the schools and community to elicit interest of African American teachers and perspective teachers in addressing the achievement gap.
  • UMass Amherst/Springfield Public Schools
    • 180 Day Program recruitment yielded 80 applicants for 15 spots. Number of minority applicants increased as did the number applying overall for the Master’s level program.
  • Wheelock College/Boston Public Schools
    • 5 of 7 graduate teacher candidates at Young Achievers are students of color
    • On-site seminar focuses on issues of race and equity in the classroom

Negotiate hiring practices with partner urban districts that enhance employment opportunities for the graduates of urban teacher preparation programs
  • Lesley University/Boston Public Schools
    • In past 3 years, 40% of teacher graduates have been hired into urban schools, but not just in Boston.
  • Wheelock College/Boston Public Schools
    • 5 teacher interns of color received financial support from BPS
    • All 7 teacher candidates at Young Achievers apply for BPS teaching positions
Conduct research on role of school-college partnerships in providing support for new teachers that will positively affect the retention rate of beginning urban teachers
  • Coalition-wide
    • Title II Recruitment funding for Project QUEST to investigate and pilot school/college partnership support of new teachers in partnership schools
  • Boston College/Boston Public Schools
    • Developing a retention reporting system on special education teachers
    • Work with Collaborative Fellows to design a retention umbrella program
  • Northeastern University/Boston Public Schools
    • Planning induction support for new teachers in City on a Hill school as an extension of the immersion program for teacher interns
  • Wheelock College/Boston Public Schools
    • 4 beginning teachers, graduates of the intern program, participate in QUEST to help identify support needs of new teacher in urban schools
Collaborate with state education agencies on addressing the issue of the retention of new teachers in urban schools
  • Coalition-wide
    • Project QUEST is part of the a larger US DOE Title II Teacher Quality Recruitment grant awarded to the MA DOE which focuses on both the recruitment and retention of teachers in Massachusetts
  • Clark University/Worcester Public Schools
    • MA DOE grant to nominate 6 teacher candidates for new teacher ‘Signing Bonus’ program
  • Northeastern University/Boston Public Schools
    • Transition to Teaching grant from BPS to prepare elementary paraprofessionals and substitute teachers in math and science for licensure
    • MA DOE grant to nominate 6 teacher candidates for new teacher Signing Bonus program
  • UMass Amherst/Springfield Public Schools
    • MA DOE grant to nominate 6 teacher candidates for new teacher Signing Bonus program
  • UMass Boston/Boston Public Schools
    • Transition to Teaching grant from BPS to prepare secondary math and science unlicensed teachers for licensure
    • Effective Substitute Teaching grant from BPS being conducted with ACORN
    • Teacher Quality grant from MA DOE to train mentor teachers for teacher candidates in their practicum
    • MA DOE grant to nominate 6 teacher candidates for new teacher Signing Bonus program
