Great Leader
Who do you think has been an outstanding leader of the 20th or early 21st century? Pick an outstanding leader and present your findings to the class in 20 minutes. Your Great Leader should lead or have led an organization so that you can comment on the leader's organizational ability. Please no fictional leaders or local sports figures. There is no written requirement for the presentation other than a copy of your presentation: either a copy of the overheads, or a written outline of the plan of your presentation and a bibliography listing the articles and books you used in your research.You can use audio-visual aids such as videos to illustrate your points. You should consider the questions below.
1. Tell us about your leader. Tell us the biography of this leader. What historical circumstances shaped this leader?
2. Managerial Roles. Which managerial roles as described in Yukl do you think were most important to the success of this leader? In which roles did the leader not excel?3. Context. How did the context of the situation affect the leader's roles? What types of organizations did this person lead? How did the culture of the organization and society affect this leader's performance?
4. Culture. Did the leader try and shape the culture of organizations? Would you describe the leader as transformational? Why or why not?
5. Traits and Behaviors. What specific traits and behaviors, as discussed in Yukl, did this leader exhibit?
6. Participation. Was this leader more participative or authoritarian? Was the leader good at delegating authority?
7. Your Evaluation. How would you evaluate the strengths and
weaknesses of this leader based on the concepts we have discussed in this course?
