As background for this case, you should be aware that venture capital firms are firms that convince wealthy investors to pool their money into a fund. The fund managers invest in companies. Venture capital firms are major sources of funds for start-up technology companies. This is a risky way to make money because most technology start-ups fail. Occasionally, however, a company will make it big and the investors will make very large profits. An angel investor is an individual who invests his or her own money in a company.

Heidi Roizen is a very successful business person.
True to her desire to network she has her own website. She is also in a very interesting video on the Stanford alumni website discussing her networking skills.

Here are a set of questions to consider while preparing your case presentation. These questions are in no particular order and should not be considered an outline of the presentation.

1. Is there something about the industry that she is in and the place that she lives that leads her to be a successful networker?

2. Heidi is clearly a master of networking. What principles does she rely on for successful networking?

3. Given that we all have time budgets (there are only so many hours in the day), what strategies does she use to make sure she is networking with the most important players?

4. In terms of the roles of the manager that Yukl discusses in Chapter 2 of his book, which roles does she emphasize and deemphasize? Why?

5. What effect does technology have on her networking abilility? What principles of email usage are important to her?

6. Why does she seem to change jobs so often? Does she have a personal life? Is there a reason why the personal lives of the men we have looked at in the cases so far are not mentioned, or does this case require an examination of Heidi Roizen's personal life? Do you consider her a success?
