Leadership In Crisis: Ernest Shackleton

Home > mb127> Leadership in Crisis

Ernest Shackleton is often cited as a great leader. There have been a number of books written about him. One of the books: Leading at the Edge: Leadership Lessons from the Extraordinary Saga of Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition by Dennis N.T. Perkins is available electronically by going to our Quest library site and searching for it. The entire book is online but only the first few chapters have to do with Shackleton. There have also been several movies about the expedition. Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure is 40 minutes, so I thought we could watch it during class.

Questions to Consider:

1. Since we are coming to the end of the course, I leave it up to you to assess his leadership. You could go in a number of directions. How does he compare to Henry V, for example? They were both leaders in crisis. Is there a difference between leaders in a crisis situation versus leaders facing a routine business problem? What is your opinion of him as a leader?
