Overfishing

Georges Bank was once a very productive area for offshore commercial fishing. The American Museum of Natural History has a very detailed history of the decline of fishing on Georges Bank. Unfortunately, Georges Bank. like so many fishing grounds wordwide, has declined precipitously over time. For example, in August of 2005, part of the fishing area was closed until April 2006 to prevent extreme overfishing. There have been many attempts to regulate fishing on Georges Bank. On Cape Cod, a Georges Bank hook sector has been established in which the local fisherman regulate themselves to limit their catches.
