The course provides an overview of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the stress response from the cellular to the behavioral level. It explains the basic principles of the stress response and effects of stress on neuronal plasticity, learning and memory, and on mental health and disease. Emphasis is also on the long-term consequences of early life stress on cognitive, emotional and social behaviors. Current research findings in both animals and humans will be discussed.
The course explores the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie psychopathology. Emphasis will be on alterations in neurobiological systems underlying psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and social disorders. The impact of genetic and environmental risk factors will be discussed. A comprehensive overview will be given of current human studies and well-established animal models as well as drug treatments and new drug developments.

Topics include basic principles of the stress response, stress and neuronal plasticity, stress and learning and memory, stress vulnerability and stress resilience, stress-related disorders, and early life stress. Current research articles in both animals and humans will be discussed.
The course will discuss current understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie mental illness. Emphasis will be on alterations in brain circuits and neurotransmitter systems underlying major depression, PTSD, autism, and schizophrenia. Current findings in human studies and animal models will be discussed.
