Oracle of Apollo

The cult of Pythian Apollo formed some time around the 8th century B.C.  The oracular priests and priestesses were heavily consulted by the Greek city-states when considering territorial expansion.  Destroyed by fire at one point in its history, the temple was rebuilt in 548 B.C., and the sanctuary area was enlarged.  Once under the control of Roman rule, the prosperity of the temple continually declined until destroyed by the Christian Emperor Theodosius in 390 A.D. in an effort to efface all signs of paganism.
