Boston College, Spring 2018
The aim of this course is to provide some of the basic tools needed for graduate algebra. In particular, we will review Galois theory (including relevant results from theory of finite groups and field extensions) as well as the theory of Dedekind domains, with a view towards number fields.
The course is intended for the first year graduate students; Interested undergraduate students are also welcome.
I will assume knowledge of a basic courses in linear algebra, and undergraduate algebra.
I will not follow one specific textbook, though all the material I will cover (and much more) can be found it
Jacobson , Basic Algebra I and II.
