A Workshop on Space Weather Effects

on Communication andNavigation Signals

will be held

on

June 7 - 8, 2001

This workshop is intended to promote discussion among researchers from North America and Europe with scientists and engineers from developing countries. The prime topics for discussion will be related to ionospheric effects on space-based communication and navigation systems. The workshop will begin with overview talks on Space Weather and on communication and navigation systems that will be affected by ionospheric and turbulent effects. Workshop and poster sessions will provide the opportunity to exchange information on worldwide and regional ionospheric problems and on current research activities aimed to assess and understand ionospheric effects on space-based systems.

The program committee is inviting the submission of abstracts for oral and poster presentation at the workshop. Topics may include the variability of the equatorial, auroral and mid-latitude ionospheres and their effects on space-based satellite signals. Significant emphasis will be placed on systems that utilize the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) signals. Abstracts are due by March 14, 2001 and can be submitted on-line by clicking on the Abstract Submittal link located at the bottom of this page.

This workshop will immediately follow a meeting of the International Beacon Satellite Symposium. The Beacon Symposium is directed by Commission G of the International Union of Radio Scientists (URSI). It is held approximately every three years and is attended by ionospheric scientists from all over the world. Topics for discussion at the Beacon Symposium include all aspects of ionospheric effects on radio propagation. Scheduling the Space Weather Workshop immediately after the Beacon Symposium provides workshop participants with even more opportunites for worldwide collaboration at the Beacon Symposium. Abstracts for the Beacon Symposium are also invited. Visit the Beacon 2001 Home Page for more information.

Participants for both the Beacon Symposium and the Space Weather Workshop are required to register. The combined registration fee for both meetings is $250.00. This fee includes morning and afternoon refreshments, a welcome barbeque, an evening banquet, listings of abstracts and a final proceedings. Registration for the meetings can be made on-line by clicking on the Registration link located at the bottom of this page.

Boston College will offer on-campus accommodations, dining options and access to the University's recreational complex for the duration of the meetings. Click on the Lodging and Dining link for more information.
