Tom!

Happy birthday! I hope that you had a relaxing birthday before the busy school year begins. Did you get in a few rounds of golf?

All is well here in Southern California. I just returned from a week-long trip to Alaska which began with an 8.2-mile swim, my longest to date. The race was an incredible experience, and quite cold - 55 degrees! Although the field of individuals swimmers wasn't much more than 20 or 25, I was pretty happy to have finished in 4th place, a few minutes behind a buddy from New York who took 2nd. I still pinch myself on occasion at the difference between my favorite race in college - a 52 second 100 butterfly - and this race that took over 3.5 hours.

I just finished my fourth summer as a Los Angeles County Lifeguard (summer jobs don't get much better than that) and will return to Loyola Marymount University for my third year as the Assistant Director of the PLACE Corps (the teaching program that I had joined by in 2003). I miss the classroom a lot, but am still learning a great deal about being an administrator, and love working at a Jesuit university.

I'll hopefully be swinging by BC in October and will be sure to get in touch with you. Rob Keely is transitioning perfectly to life here in the South Bay of Los Angeles (he lives just about 3 miles away!) and begins teaching tomorrow!

All the best, and again, I hope that you had a wonderful birthday.

In Peace,
Matthias
