2007 Award Winners
James J. Kane - Academic Award
I was honored to name this award after James J Kane. Jim was associated with our sport and our school and our program for many years. He was an All-America Swimmer while at Southern Connecticut. He was the head coach at Boston College High School. He also was an Admissions Director for Boston College – the one responsible for making decisions on acceptance (or the other alternative) for all those names that I would bring to the Admissions table. He was important in creating the great working relationship that I have with Admissions. Jim passed away due to a brain tumor, so to honor Jim – I proudly named this award in his honor.
This is my most important award. It acknowledges why you came to BC. Many of you (and those before you) have performed admirably in the natatorium; but most of you have also performed just as well or better in the classroom
Last Spring the women had their best academic semester ever. The team GPA was at a best 3.504 as was the 92.9% percent that was over the 3.0 mark. Another impressive stat was that 57.1% checked in at over a 3.5 GPA The team GPA placed Boston College’s women at 9th nationally and we were the top ACC school in the nation. The fall saw the expected drop due to the influx of another freshmen class – but those frosh held up their part. The GPA was a 3.348 (very good for the fall) and the team was at 88.6% holding at over 3.0 (with only two frosh below). Nationally we dropped to 20th place and Clemson finished ahead of us, so we were the second best ACC squad.
The men remained about where they have been these last five or six semesters with another pair of 3.1+’s. Last spring we checked in with a 3.163 which placed us 20th nationally in the CSCAA poll and second in the ACC behind Georgia Tech. The fall had us at 3.126 which placed us 21st nationally but we were the top ACC team. In an unusual way the fall took a step up. Last spring we had 64.7% above the 3.0 mark but the fall saw us improve to 70.6% with a pat on the back to the frosh who’s 90% mark raised the team. Hopefully that looks good for the future.
